Cannonball & Sunspot

Before Cannoball looked like the handsome all-American blond-haired blue-eyed hunk we all know & love, he was actually kinda... homely looking, as evidenced by these scans from New Mutants Vol. 1 #21, in which Sam goes skinny-dipping, flies around naked, hangs out in a towel and when he finally gets the chance to dress, he just puts on his pants but still bares his chest. Nice.

We also get a little Sunspot beefcake when he's in a speedo for one panel. I love how even when Roberto had the time to get fully dressed, Sam only grabbed a towel. Thanks to Citizen Alan for letting us know about this issue.

I miss beanpole Cannonball, it made him nicely distinctive.

And you forgot to mention that he flew, half naked, and possibly wearing only a towel into Doug's bedroom in the middle of the night to wake him up and fly away with him on an amazing adventure. (Bring your own subtext to THAT sentence! ;) )

I adore Doug's comments in that last panel.
Damn, how did I miss that?I guess I'm too focused on Sam/Roberto and Doug/Warlock that any other pairing went over my head. XD

Bill Sienkiewicz entering his more experimental crazy art phase here, I liked his earlier Neal Adams clone phase better, his early Moon Knight art was fantastic and often hot especially compared to his New Mutants work.
I didn't realize that this was Sienkiewicz art. Your right, it looks very different from his earlier work. But I do like that he tried to reinvent himself as an artist and that he didn't just try to stick to one type of style. Kudos to him for that.

I loved Sienkiewicz's New Mutants run, he was taking chances, and doing something different which energetic and new, which was a very risky, but very exciting, strategy.

Wasn't there an early New Mutants story with Cannonball and Sunspot being stripped and chained 'dominated' by guards before being forced to fight in a 'Rome' type country? That was ages ago, and fondly remembered!

@simon - It's a Claremont series, sooner or later EVERYONE gets "stripped and chained 'dominated'". :)
@simon, I think that's from New Mutants #9, definitely a hot scenario. Roberto & Sam were chained in the dungeon wearing loincloths while the girls are spoiled in the women's house where they get bubble baths and wine (secretly, so that they can look pretty when they are sold into slavery). I gotta scan this! Thanks for reminding me of this issue, simon.

@icon-uk, so true! My favorite Claremont bondage moment has to be Angel being captured by the Morlocks. He's bound in his underwear as he's about to become Calisto's bitch.

@icon-uk & Pandesal - ta lads, that's a graphic novel order from amazon then;) & i remember the Angel/Calisto's bitch storyline! There was absolutely no need for Angel to be wearing a loincloth-especially with that body oil on hand!!!

I still have the old TPB with the Angel\Morlocks story, it's called X-Men: From The Ashes and includes Uncanny X-Men 168-176 I believe and also features Scott meeting & marrying Madelyne Pryor, Storm getting her famous Mohawk punker look, Rogue joining the team, & Wolvie almost getting married in Japan; it can still be gotten cheap too, I highly recommend it and those issue have plenty of beefcake from Scott too. :)

Must be me, but I always thought the clothes on Roberto on that first panel were just added at the color phase, and the "speedo" was just a shadow. I think he was naked, as well. I doubt he would have minded Sam looking at his private bits.

César, that's absolutely correct. After all, the boys must have seen each other naked before... in the showers or somewhere else.
Sam&Beto (or "Bobby"), one of the my X-ships... <3
