Cypher & Cannonball

More classic beefcake from the pages of New Mutants!

In New Mutants Vol. 1 #35 the boys change in their locker room, though only Cypher and Cannonball are shirtless.

And in New Mutants Vol. 1 #32 the team gathers for "a council of war" in their jammies... how cute! Once again Cypher & Cannonball are the only ones that are bare-chested. I love me some blond boys.

The New Mutants guys are always stripping down, those wanton hussies! ;) I need to hunt down more of these issues too! :)

Oh they're young, they have fun getting naked, don't they?

Indeed. And thanks to that this blog is filling up New Mutants goodness, HA! :)

It's unanimous: we love New Mutants.

Now if only the New Mutants were real and could love us back. ;)
I must confess, I was pleasantly surprised that there's so much New Mutants love out there. I started collecting comics during the X-Force era (don't hate me for that) so I just missed the first volume of NM and therefore didn't know much about them until recently. I guess it's a testament to their popularity that the team has recently been revived with most of the original members in the roster.

Yeah, the New Mutants were like Marvel's attempt to compete with DC's youth oriented New Teen Titans which is still wildly popular as well, although DC's recent attempts to relaunch the Titans haven't been as successful as the New Mutants reunion.

The New Mutants were fascinating partly because so many of them has powers that were very limited. Each had only one basic power and they could barely control that. Sam could fly, but wasn't strong and couldn't steer; Berto was strong, but not invulnerable and never for very long; Dani could only project fear; Rahne hated her wolf-form, and Doug is a poster boy for "Powers not suited for active combat". etc... It made for a refeshing change (The Titans were nearly all experienced heroes)
@DAN, Oy, DC has really mishandled the Titans. I've read that they actually rivaled the X-Men in popularity back in the '80s, now both of their current ongoing titles are struggling creatively & sales-wise, not to mention the massive character derailment that's been plaguing most of their members, past and present. At least we'll always have the Wolfman/Perez era (unless the "relaunch" wipes that out, too!)

@icon-uk, I never really thought of them that way but you're right, they're all pretty "weak" power-wise, none of them will ever be omega level mutants, I can see how refreshing it would be to read about them back then. I'll have to check out their current series and maybe get into the old one as well.

Nah, we'll always have the Wolfman & Perez Titans to appreciate and re-read, DC may try to ignore past continuity, but we fans will always remember those creative peaks.

I've enjoyed recently reading more of 80's era New Mutants, but I've been bugged by the inconsistency of quality in the stories and art. DC really had Marvel beat in the 80's when it came to team books as both Wolfman\Perez New Teen Titans & Levitz\Giffen Legion Of Super-Heroes were far more consistent art and story wise, not to mention far sexier than Marvel's mutant titles or Avengers. Things seem to have flipped as today Marvel has DC beat in almost every regard.

Even before X-Men, one of my first Marvel Universe comics that I bought and read was New Mutants and I became a huge fan right there. I've often said that one of my favorite Marvel characters is Doug, I always loved that kid.
And I agree with Dan, whatever DC does now with the relaunch won't matter. I'll still read my old comics, the ones I like and I won't give a damn if they are in continuity or not.

I'm glad to say I own all of those back issues. I really love my NM collection, heheheheh.

I also love my Gen X collection (missing one issue). I bought that one when it was being published.
@DAN, Oh, since you mentioned the Legion I'm gonna post some scans featuring some shirtless Legion lads in the next update.

@Arion, yeah, I guess we can still enjoy the back issues, I was just a little pissed that there is a possibility that some of my favorite storyarcs will be retconned out of continuity which would mean the my favorite characters wouldn't be the same. I'm (mostly) over it now though. Mostly. Let DC do whatever they want, just don't expect me to buy their stuff.

@Cesar, I envy you! Do you also collect the newer/current teen tiles like Avengers Academy or Young X-Men?

I no longer buy DC stuff and now with this reboot I feel even less interested in their stuff.
