Marv Wolfman had a thing for greyer characters. Deathstroke and Blackfire began as villains. We had to root for Cheshire when she framed that South African to his own racist government. Vigilante, I don't like Vigilante, but I can't help but think these were the stories he really wanted to tell. Even Brother Blood has an origin of the "you can't fight fate" variety.
