New Mutants at the Beach

Time for some teenage mutant ninja beefcake. In New Mutants Special Edition # 1, our teen heroes are enjoying some downtime at the beach. I love that Doug & Roberto are in speedos, but Warlock in a bikini? (At the time he was new to human society, he eventually changed into a speedo too). Also, I didn't know Sam was a "never nude". In addition to the boys, the girls also serve up some cheesecake. Many thanks to Arion for sharing these scans with us!

I'm pretty sure Sam is not a "never-nude." I distinctly remember, that in the issue where Warlock and Cypher joined the team, he went skinny-dipping in the lake behind the school while the girls were having a slumber party and later flashed some of them while cannonballing past a window.
Damn! Now, I have to look for that issue! Thanks for the info, Citizen Alan.

Yup, Roberto went with him.

I remember being confused at Doug wearing a speedo in this issue when he had hoped no one would notice how tight his swimsuit was in the Impossible Man issue...

Until I realized what he really meant that other time.

Warlock's bikini is a copy of what 'Yana is wearing.
What is this Impossible Man issue you speak of? Mmm, I must do some research on that. After all, we can't have too much Doug Ramsey beefcake, right?

It's the one where he wants to play with the X-Men again (he did so around 1980, with a scavenger hunt).

He finds the New Mutants instead (Amara and Xi'an are sick and absent from this adventure).

Imp asks the NMs to play with him, but they couldn't care less. Of course, he does not take no for an answer and calls them chicken.

Warlock overreacts to this and they challenge each other to prove who can do something the other can't.

The Mutants have to chase them all over the world trying to stop them before they hurt someone. One of those stops is Brazil, during the carnival, surrounded by good looking, nearly naked. Roberto gets swimsuits for everyone and it's then when Doug thinks that line, that he hopes the others don't notice how tight his suit is.

He does not mention why exactly his suit is suddenly so tight, though.

Oh, and it is drawn by Alan Davis (whom I like waaaaay better than Art Adams).

@Cesar - Alan Davis, huh? I must track down this issue too, it sounds fun, don't think I've read it yet and I really want to now!
DAN said…
Just found out the Impossible Man issue by Alan Davis is New Mutants Annual 3 from 1987 in a story aptly titled "Anything You Can Do..!" no less!
You beat me to it DAN! I just googled it too. lol
DAN said…
I used the Comic Book DB, it was faster and easier! ;) Now to check out that issue!
It turns out that we already have scans from that Annual which were posted almost for years ago (wow, time flies!) But that post doesn't feature Doug, only Warlock & Pop-Up Man (or Impossible Man?)

http://shirtless-superheroes.blogspot.com/2007/06/warlock-pop-up-man.html

I'll be posting additional scans from that issue in the next blog update. Thanks for all the info DAN, Cesar & Citizen Alan!
@Citizen Alan, I was able to find the issue in which Sam goes skinny dipping. Its New Mutants #21.

BTW, "never nude" is an Arrested Development reference. One of the characters has issues about nudity & wears cutoffs all the time.
DAN said…
Ooo la la! Keep the sexy commin', Pandesal! Can't wait to see that skinny dipping scene, lol! :)
Well, the skinny-dipping scene is from the early days of the New Mutants, back when Sam was in his... homely phase. He didn't look like the stud we all know and love now.

Doug also goes topless courtesy of Alan Davis, for the last half of New Mutants Annual #2 "Why do we do the stupid things we do?", when he loans his tunic to Captain Britain (long story).

Your tags here are a little borked though. Warlock from the New Mutants is not "Adam Warlock", and Douglock isn't in this scans.

@icon, that annual 2 looks really great in my Captain Britain Omnibus which I love dearly! Art Adams's 80's work is good, but Alan Davis has remained absolutely masterful over the years!
@icon_uk, I remember that Annual! It also had a naked, de-aged Brian Braddock! Looks like I'm gonna be posting a lot of classic New Mutants beefcake in the next scheduled update! Thanks for the info and the tag corrections!

@DAN, I love both Alan Davis & Art Adams, I can't choose who I like better though, they're both great artists. It's a shame that they don't work more regularly nowadays.
DAN said…
Yeah, the veterans we grew up with are being put out to pasture and it's a real shame!

Plus, look at this MASSIVE comment thread! If it weren't for those darn sexualized New Mutants kids... ;)

Hahahahahaha, indeed.

I guess some of you have seen this, but for the rest, the first pic on this post is based on the Captain Britain/ New Mutants annual.

No Brian in that pic, though. Only Betsy.

Aw, I miss the old British non-Asian-martial-artist Betsy of the 80's, still can't figure out the rationale behind turning Brian's fraternal twin sister into an Asian assassin type. Talk about WTF!

Doug Ramsey always was one of my favorite Marvel characters. This New Mutants issue was also one of the first ones I read and I have to admit I fell in love with him (metaphorically speaking, of course).

And yes, Alan Davis & Art Adams should be working on a regular basis. I'm a big fan of both .

@DAN, yeah, didn't know the New Mutants would get this kind of reaction. I'm definitely gonna be posting more NM stuff. Re: Asian Betsy, I don't know why the whole body switching thing was done. Maybe they wanted to have more asian representation in the X-Books.

@Cesar, of course I've seen those before. Great job on the art! I love how Doug & Betsy are using Warlock like a carpet!

@Arion, thanks for sending these scans in buddy. I also have some Cypher scans queued up for future updates, so stay tuned (though I bet you've seen them all before.)

You're welcome. And I'll be waiting to see more Cypher in upcoming posts. I don't have the entire New Mutants run so I'm sure there will be things I haven't seen.
Icecypher said…
More Cypher is definitely something I'd like to see!

And the question is not that much why Betsy was changed to a Japanese body (I can see that as part of the story as it developed).

The question would be why, whenever Betsy is seen as part of alternate realities (not alterations of the main one, as in House of M), or on video games that don't follow the comics, or in movies, cartoons, wherever, she is still seen as Japanese without any explanation...

Well, I know why, but it's a real-world explanation that does not leave me satisfied...
You're right. Even in Age of Apocalypse Betsy was asian. I guess we just have to assume that the body switch occurred in all alternate realities. =)
DAN said…
I just wish they'd change Betsy back to her original body, it's as if the switch was done to forever separate her from brother, and I'm just against close siblings being forcibly separated by full-on making them no longer genetically related. It goes back to Marvel U.S. trying to separate its continuity from Marvel U.K. (or at least sort of ignore the U.K. continuity) for no good reason as well. If Claremont & Lee just had Betsy learn martial arts it would have been fine, but to completely change her ethnicity is just ridiculous and I hate it.
Icecypher said…
I think at the beginning it may have been thought as temporary. Or, at the very least, not made to distance her from Brian or to bury Marvel UK continuity.

I think Claremont actually likes including the link between her and her family, even old Marvel UK enemies, so I do not think his goal was to get away from them.

BTW, the first AoA was superb!

The second, was horrible. Characters who were dead simply popped up for no reason (Moonstar, I'm looking at you), humans recover overnight from years of war (not talking about buildings, those are easier to rebuild, but of lifestyles and emotional scars), stupid inclusion of current main continuity characters (I like Jay Guthrie, but the Guthries' fate was made clear in the first series).

The only thing I liked in the series was having Husk as the enemy. Everything else was stupid.
DAN said…
It just seems that Marvel pretty much ignores and doesn't promote Captain Britain & Excalibur related characters overall or they try to internationalize or Americanize them, and it annoys me greatly as those characters are some of my absolute favorites in comics.

LOL, We made it to 30 comments, yay! And I can't wait to see more of Cypher in future, he was so cute and his friendship with Warlock was lovely.
Icecypher said…
I like his new design, although I still can't figure out if they aged him or left him at the same age he was when he died (that's what I think should be correct).

He grew some barely noticeable facial hair in Limbo, but still not too much as to imply he is not a teen anymore...
Arion said…
Didn't know that . I haven't been following the current New Mutants title.
Don't fear, Arion! I'll post some post-resurrection Cypher soon. =)
Icecypher said…
Arion, the new series is definitely worth checking. There is respect for the old New Mutants there. If you have a chance, get it, you won't be sorry.
@Cesar, so the new(est) series is good, huh? I'm gonna check it out.

The Asgardian Wars TPB, featuring this NM annual, was the first Marvel Comic I ever read. It changed my life, though probably not in ways my brother intended when he lent it to me...

I've been in love with Doug ever since. So, thanks! It's so good to see these again.

I've always assumed the conversation went something along the lines of Jim Lee saying "I want to make a kickass ninja" and Claremont having to figure out how to work it. It made sense at the time, when the x-men were all scattered and lost and stuff. Betsy did feel a bit of a throwback during this most self-conciously gritty of comic eras.

What I objected to was when it was retconned to a body swap, as opposed to a body alteration, which was much scarier and fit with her past with Mojo.
