Shirtless Gambit Flashback

In X-Men Legacy #229, Gambit has a flashback to that them when he thought it was a good idea to voluntarily turn into Apocalypse's horseman, Death. Bad move, Cajun!

Bad move, writers. This is one where I place the blame on them...

To have Apocalypse return and make it so it was not exciting (and so I did not care) is something I did not think possible, but the different crises in each book made this just one more...

I haven't read this storyarc yet but it does seem kinda dumb. Why would Gambit do that?
